I was recently talking to a good friend and business associate of mine about the state of the home business today. He owns his own SEO business, however like any smart business owner he always has his eyes open for new potentially lucrative opportunities. He made a couple excellent points concerning the state of the home business today.
The first point he made was don’t think you’re selling cell phones or digital phone service or this exotic juice or whatever your product might be. In today’s economic environment you’re selling the ability to make money.
People would sell dirt if they thought it would make them money. However, that being said my friend also said it is important to pay attention to what you’re selling. Certain types of products are not going to sell that well, making starting a home business with them a dumb idea.
Here is a partial list of products he feels would not be a good idea to market:
Any of the exotic health juices – you know the ones – Noni, Acai Berry, etc. The cost of these is about $150 a month on autoship. We happen to have some first had knowledge through our contacts that these products are down in sales. It’s never a good idea to start a business with a product that is down in sales.
Basically any home business that requires much more than a $50 monthly outlay is probably not a good idea. However, the real key is not the amount of the monthly outlay, but how fast can the business at least put you into a break-even point.
And this is very important, because the vast majority of people starting a home business quit too early, often preceded by pressure that they’re losing too much money.
So what type of home business and product will people gravitate to?
We believe that the number 1 type home business people will be attracted to is one that will save them money on items they already use. However, it won’t be in our opinion just a buying club type MLM.
There are a number of these today and while some are doing okay don’t be looking at any of them expecting to make more than some part time income.
Here is what in our expert opinion will be the home business to get involved with.
1. One that saves a person money.
2. Has products that appeal to a small business and can save them money on services critical to their business success.
3. Has products that are an improvement to services a small business is already using.
4. Has products that are used by and considered a must have by a large section of the population such that they won’t cancel their service in a down economy.
5. One with the right type of comp plan that is attractive to large numbers of people. One that people can benefit from the efforts of many others not just their own. Something like a 3 x 9 forced matrix.
6. Lastly and most important is the ability to show the prospect how they can get in profit quickly and also how they can easily obtain prospects. (In most cases this is going to involve the use of the internet.)
A couple comments on why in our expert opinion having products that appeal to a small business is so important.
1. First of all the home businesses someone could get involved in today, very few have products that have any real appeal to a small traditional business.
2. Small business is the engine of this country’s economy. 80% of all jobs are in small business.
3. They unlike someone you might recruit like your next door neighbor already have access to hundreds if not thousands of potential customers and prospects.
4. Small business people tend to understand business and thus typically are open to any sound business endeavor they believe can make them money.
